{"id":1041206,"date":"2025-12-28T15:23:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T20:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/?p=1041206"},"modified":"2026-01-09T11:25:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T16:25:31","slug":"us_government_kills_drones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/features\/us_government_kills_drones\/","title":{"rendered":"The U.S. Government Kills Drones &#8211; Everyone Suffers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of December 23rd, 2025, the drone market in the U.S. is effectively dead, or more accurately, it was murdered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the 23rd, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/news\/fcc-adds-dji-and-other-foreign-drones-to-covered-list-effectively-banning-new-imports\/\"> FCC added not only DJI to its list of \u201cCovered Devices\u201d<\/a> but, as a surprise to the drone community, banned all Chinese-made drones. The Covered Devices include specific companies that the government security agencies say run domestic spying laws afoul, and so cannot be sold in the United States.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ban doesn\u2019t outlaw the use of existing drones, and the inventory of drones still in the country isn\u2019t affected. But without new models coming into the country, supplies of legal drones are going to dwindle rapidly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1041221\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28160618\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.05.48@2x.jpg\" alt=\"DJI Drone again white background. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28160618\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.05.48@2x.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28160618\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.05.48@2x-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28160618\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.05.48@2x-768x483.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28160618\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.05.48@2x.jpg 1486w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I suspect companies using drones for their services (wedding photographers, real estate agents, home inspectors, etc.) are going to purchase what\u2019s left in the country pretty quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ability to keep using and selling the drones in the U.S points out the hypocrisy of this decision, and I\u2019ll get to that in a moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just the \u201chobbyist\u201d markets that will be affected, but also crucial uses by rescue teams and firefighters, infrastructure inspection, research, and more. While the discussion has been around DJI\u2019s drones in particular, suddenly, on December 23rd, all Chinese-made drones were added, with little warning, to the covered list as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RIP drone use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, at the conclusion of the government\u2019s efforts to ban DJI, it\u2019s easy to forget the shaky grounds on which the ban was implemented, and that the process seems either woefully incompetent at best or, at worst, a punitive witch hunt to remove DJI drones despite a complete lack of evidence about its nefarious intent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1041222\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28160904\/E1091HRR.jpg.avif\" alt=\"THe back of a person who is standing out in a field. They are holding a drone with their right hand. \" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s travel back to the start of DJI\u2019s woes to ask ourselves\u2026what the hell happened?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>DJI has been rushing to get models out the door, offering large sales on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/news\/dji-avata-2-fly-smart-combo-drops-below-800-usd\/\">drones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/news\/dji-osmo-mobile-6-price-cut-on-amazon\/\">gimbals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/news\/djis-8k-camera-limited-time-deal\/\">camera systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DJI In The Crosshairs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, the U.S Army banned the use of DJI drones, covered in this<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/info.publicintelligence.net\/ICE-DJI-China.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0document from the Department of Homeland Security <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(DHS) that suggested DJI drones <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [emphasis added] pose a security risk. I say might because no evidence was provided that there had ever been any secure or sensitive data transmitted to the Chinese government, or any data at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/info.publicintelligence.net\/ICE-DJI-China.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read the whole document<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you\u2019d like to see a masterpiece of innuendo and logical fallacies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement division of the DHS released a report called \u201cDJI Likely Providing Critical Infrastructure and Law Enforcement Data to Chinese Government.&#8221; I think the use of \u201clikely\u201d in this is important; this guidance was written despite no evidence to support it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The document says that the Special Agent in Charge of the Intelligence Program (SIP)\u00a0 in Los Angeles assessed with \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confidence [emphasis added] that Chinese-based company DJI Science and Technology is providing U.S. critical infrastructure and law enforcement data to the Chinese government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It states that this was \u201c based on information derived from open source reporting and a reliable source within the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) industry, with first and secondhand access.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conveniently, they cite open source reporting as proof, but confusingly, they do not provide that reporting. And since the nature of \u201copen source\u201d is that there is no one author, they can say it exists without having to have any details about who wrote the report. A report they did not attach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the evidence comes from one &#8220;reliable&#8221; source, and it should be noted that &#8220;secondhand&#8221; access means &#8220;hearsay.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another &#8220;proof&#8221; \u00a0that DJI is participating in widespread espionage is that they were marketing products to \u201ccompanies in the critical infrastructure and law enforcement sectors\u2026\u201d and \u201cat least ten large companies and organizations in the railroad, utility, media, farming, education, and federal law enforcement sectors have already purchased and begun using DJI UAS. The most frequent uses include mapping land, inspecting infrastructure, conducting surveillance, and monitoring hazardous materials. They also cite the hobbyist consumer and professional use, in other words, us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the government is convinced that DJI is spying because DJI is marketing its drones to the exact customers that would benefit from those drones. The government points out that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they\u2019re even going so far as to take out booths at trade shows that include businesses that potentially benefit from the use of drones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1041223 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28161128\/flying-drone-in-spring-forest-2024-12-06-06-57-15-utc-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Side view of a person in a forrect holding the controller for a drone, while the drone hovers nearby. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28161128\/flying-drone-in-spring-forest-2024-12-06-06-57-15-utc-scaled.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28161128\/flying-drone-in-spring-forest-2024-12-06-06-57-15-utc-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28161128\/flying-drone-in-spring-forest-2024-12-06-06-57-15-utc-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I guess if DJI had gone after solely the poet or bakery owner markets, they\u2019d have gotten away with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This document uses the word \u201clikely\u201d eight times. It also uses \u201clow confidence\u201d twice, \u201cmoderate confidence\u201d twice, and \u201chigh confidence\u201d four times. At no time does it use the phrase \u201cdefinitely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few more comical things caught my eye in this document. The first is from this list of what DJI collects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGPS imagery and locations, register facial recognition data.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the information collected includes proprietary and sensitive critical infrastructure data, such as detailed imagery of power control panels, security measures for critical infrastructure sites, or materials used in bridge construction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find it interesting that a big risk is that DJI drones gather information on \u201cmaterials used in bridge construction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to know what they\u2019re making a bridge out of? Watch them build it. Bridges are built, by definition, where there are people and traffic. If you want to know what materials they\u2019re using, sit there and watch. Or ask a construction worker. They\u2019re happy to tell you what their job entails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you don\u2019t have the time, I can tell you. It\u2019s mostly steel, concrete, and asphalt. Please don\u2019t tell the government, I don\u2019t want them to know I\u2019m sharing critical bridge-making information with you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the final bit of evidence is that DJI confirmed that the company would turn over information about users based in China if a request were made by the Chinese government. It also says it would respect the laws of the countries in which the drones are used when it comes to data privacy and information provided to local authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1041226\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28161311\/fa26554c-f301-449e-b122-f41a6653bea8.jpg.avif\" alt=\"A bridge under construction with a concrete pouring arm over it. \" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our government also points out that DJI\u2019s Terms of Service says, \u201cPlease note that if you conduct your flight in certain countries, your flight data might be monitored and provided to the government authorities according to local regulatory laws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, DJI is letting customers know that if governments in a country where the drones are operated require access by law, they have to give the information to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In other words, DJI&#8217;s transparency told people it would obey the laws of the countries in which it operates. Very suspicious.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also said that in China and probably Hong Kong, they would have to give the government flight data if required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we\u2019re limiting the use of DJI in the U.S. because in China, they would be required to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I keep intending to write \u201cand now turning away from that document,\u201d but I keep being reminded how absurd it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In 2017, it attests, DJI started to offer drones with infrared scanners called NDVI that farmers can use to figure out nitrogen levels of their cops. A \u201clarge, family-owned wine producer in California\u201d purchased drones to use this scanner, and \u201csoon afterward, Chinese companies began purchasing vineyards in the same area. According to the [single source they had], \u201cit appeared the companies were able to use DJI data to their own benefit and profit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, maybe it\u2019s that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vineyards are only in specific areas where wine-producing grapes are grown, and if you want to buy a vineyard, that&#8217;s where you go.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I guess it&#8217;s more logical that the Chinese government stole the information about nitrogen levels in grape harvests and used it to figure out where in the country to buy vineyards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing DJI was accused of does seem accurate; DHS said that DJI had been \u201cdumping\u201d products to kill off competition. Dumping is the act of selling products below their manufacturing costs in order to generate market share.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember the early days of drones, and DJI&#8217;s pricing was extremely aggressive. A lot of companies engage in dumping to kill off competitors, and Chinese companies are often accused of dumping products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there were also a lot of companies making unpolished and poor quality drones, and it\u2019s hard to say which competitors were killed because of pricing and which were dead due ot poor quality control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not qualified to say there\u2019s no reason to be concerned about DJI, or that it\u2019s out of the realm of possibility that they have, in fact, sent data to China. What I\u2019m qualified to say is that the original complaints about DJI came with no evidence, no specific instances of infrastructure spying, and no proof of who the single source the government was quoting might be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1041233\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28163345\/ff214d869bc96008e29aaed683700be4@origin.jpg\" alt=\"A DJI flip drone behing operated. But does this mode really restrict data breaches?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the U.S. Government is convinced that DJI is a cover for a Chinese espionage ring, mustn&#8217;t there be a way to test this? An independent audit?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Shop for DJI Products Now &#8211; Once They&#8217;re Gone, They&#8217;re Gone<\/h1>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/DJI\/page\/A2F1C74C-8865-4820-AD23-3C56F28F254C?lp_asin=B0G272V9JD&amp;ref_=ast_bln&amp;store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto\">Visit the Amazon DJI Store<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/bhdji\">Visit the B&amp;H DJI Store page<\/a><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>The Many Independent Audits of DJI.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, the same year that the DHS issued its memo about DJI, the company submitted that DJI FlightHub had passed the SOC2 audit from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Flighthub is the company&#8217;s cloud-based fleet management tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it sounds like it\u2019s a financial audit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hyperproof.io\/soc2\/#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20SOC%202,Accepted%20Privacy%20Principles%20(GAPP).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the SOC2 certification <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ensures your business or application is handling customer data securely and in a manner that protects your organization and the privacy of your customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, DJI\u2019s overall data practices were evaluated by the independent firm Kivu. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dji.com\/newsroom\/news\/independent-study-validates-dji-data-security-practices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the DJI press release <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about these tests, \u201cKivu independently bought DJI drones as well as iOS and Android devices in the United States, and downloaded the DJI GO 4 mobile apps. Kivu set up systems to capture all data transmitted through iOS and Android devices running DJI GO 4, and reviewed source code, application data, server addresses, and data generated during operation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DJI passed this audit as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the United States Department of the Interior released a report detailing the Office of Aviation Services&#8217; multi-year-long process to ensure drones used for government purposes could safely protect data. Its work began in 2014, and in 2015, the OAS determined that DJI drones could <em>not<\/em> protect sensitive data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OAS planned to work instead with drone-maker 3D Robotics, but it closed due to market competition (from DJI). The OAS noted that \u201cUAS (drones) from U.S.-based companies were up to 10x less capable aircraft for the same price or 10x more costly than similarly capable DJI aircraft.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same report details that in 2017, the OAS and Department of Defense (DOD) began implementing a test plan to find a way to create solutions to meet the security needs of governmental flights of drones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same year, DJI approached the OAS with an offer to \u201ccollaborate on the development, testing, and potential fielding of a customer-focused enterprise solution that would meet the interior\u2019s\u2026\u201d data safety requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/terra-1-g.djicdn.com\/851d20f7b9f64838a34cd02351370894\/trust-center\/U.S.%20DEPARTMENT%20OF%20INTERIOR%20AUDIT%20(2019)_.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 53-page report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a lot of fun to read. Still, it details page by page how the government and DJI developed a certification program to fly DJI M600 and Mavic Pro drones, along with custom software and firmware from DJI to ensure data safety further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1041230\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28162902\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.28.53@2x.jpg\" alt=\"A chart from the Department of the Interior showing how they mitigate drone risk.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28162902\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.28.53@2x.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28162902\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.28.53@2x-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28162902\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.28.53@2x-768x422.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28162902\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.28.53@2x.jpg 1168w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While one governmental agency was recommending discontinuing the use of DJI products, the Department of the Interior and the Department of Defense were working on safely expanding their use through the development of \u00a0&#8220;Government Edition&#8221; models with advanced protections in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DJI also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/terra-1-g.djicdn.com\/851d20f7b9f64838a34cd02351370894\/trust-center\/INL-Drone-Report-Oct-2019.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed the Idaho National Laboratory cybersecurity audit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Government Edition Matrice 600 Pro and Mavic Pro 2 GE drones and \u201cfound no major areas of concern related to data leakage, thereby supporting that the multi-layered mitigations DOI has in place are in fact working as designed to meet their published security requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these auditing programs only certified the government version of the drones. Surely the Local Data Mode must be leaking data?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not according to the FTI Security Audit completed by the consulting firm in 2020, which DJI says investigated the source code for DJI applications, and also reviewed DJI\u2019s hardware. The link to this study has 404\u2019d, and as we can\u2019t find an additional source, this claim has to be taken skeptically. However, cybersecurity blogs at the time mention this study as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the notable cybersecurity firm Booz Allen Hamilton <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/terra-1-g.djicdn.com\/851d20f7b9f64838a34cd02351370894\/trust-center\/BOOZ%20ALLEN%20HAMILTON%20-%20UAS%20COE%20AUDIT%20(2020).pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performed an audit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Mavic Pro\u2019s government version, and the Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition in conjunction, an audit performed with the firm PrecisionHawk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This audit did find some \u201cunmitigated risks\u201d that applied to drones in general, not specifically to DJI. One such risk is an IP address connection to U.S.-based servers in the case of drones being flown here and in Germany. The first were connections to Google Maps, McAfee, and Amazon Web Services\u2014all components of map loading. The German IP address was Akamai, the global data distribution company on which almost all websites run. In a document from DJI called \u201ctests against national cybersecurity and privacy protection standards,\u201d it was reported that this security firm independently reviewed the DJI Mavic 3, Mini 2, and Air 2S drones <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sec-cdn.dbeta.me\/djisrc\/public\/img\/TUV-ETR-Comsumer.477de70.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and attested to their security<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> features.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another FTI audit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/terra-1-g.djicdn.com\/851d20f7b9f64838a34cd02351370894\/trust-center\/2024_09--FTI%20Cybersecurity--Executive%20Summary%20of%20DJI%20Assessment.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was performed in 2024,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the cloud-based FlightHUB 2 received ISO 27701 and 27001 certification that same year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Congress to the\u2026Rescue?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Congress passed the Secure and Trusted Communications Network Act, which requires that the FCC create a list of companies that pose an unacceptable risk to the United States domestic security. The FCC\u2019s listing is called the \u201cCovered List\u201d as it\u2019s the companies the FCC lists as being a possible danger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That list is updated regularly as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Under that act, companies like Huawei, ZTE, as well as some technology providers, surveillance gear manufacturers, and antivirus companies are prohibited from being sold in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1041236\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28164138\/1764848975_IMG_2626636.jpg\" alt=\"A marketing shot of. folded Antigravity drone.\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, DJI was added to the list of companies to be part of the Covered List as part of the 2025 funding of the NDAA. However, part of including DJI \u00a0on that list was the congressional requirement that an appropriate government agency perform a security audit to see if DJI should be on the list or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a year between the NDAA passing and the implementation date of the NDAA, no audit was made. There is no indication that they had even entertained the idea of performing an audit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After months of trying to get a government audio, in December, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/news\/dji-urges-u-s-agencies-to-begin-security-audit-as-ban-deadline-nears\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DJI made final appeals <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the FBI, DOJ, and other bodies to complete the congressionally-mandated review. Unfortunately, none was forthcoming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, President Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaging-resource.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1041206&amp;action=edit&amp;classic-editor\"> issued executive orders<\/a> scaling up the domestic production of \u201ctrusted, American-manufactured\u201d drones. He added that \u201cbuilding a strong and secure domestic drone market is vital to reducing reliance on foreign sources, strengthening critical supply chains, and ensuring that the benefits of this technology are delivered to the American people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I completely agree that there should be a vibrant domestic drone industry. I\u2019m sure most customers would prefer to buy drones built in Kansas instead of China, but we can\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current domestic drone manufacturers, including Freefly Systems, Skydio, and Teal Drones, all make enterprise-class \u201creconnaissance\u201d drones, not commercial or \u201chobbyist\u201d drones. And these drones are very expensive as a result.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SKdyio X10 is about the size of a DJI Matrice, but instead of costing around $8000, it starts around $16,00<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 23rd, the clock ran out on DJI and every other foreign-made drone as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While President Trump discussed reducing the dependence on foreign drones, instead, imports of drones were outright banned, with no good domestic alternatives for the majority of users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drone-centric companies like wedding videographers, travel companies, real estate videographers, home inspectors, and dozens of other categories are likely to go out of business. Those business owners are unlikely to feel that the executive order and the Covered List changes delivered any benefits to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also impacted will be search-and-rescue teams, fire departments, law enforcement departments, news crews, utility companies, and countless other agencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1041231\" src=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28163101\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.30.47@2x.jpg\" alt=\"Two peole looking at. drone while. fire rages off in the distance. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28163101\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.30.47@2x.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28163101\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.30.47@2x-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28163101\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.30.47@2x-768x523.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.imaging-resource.com\/2025\/12\/28163101\/CleanShot-2025-12-28-at-11.30.47@2x.jpg 1230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having to buy a $10,000 drone instead of a $1,000 drone will suddenly remove drones from the front lines of safety, research, and infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I\u2019m not an economist (I\u2019m not even particularly good at managing my finances) it seems that if we wanted to reduce dependence on foreign drones without devastating the markets using them today, we would have been better served by implementing the security audits mandated by congress, providing incentives for domestic drone companies to ramp up, and given DJI and others the choice of making drone manufacturing facilities here, or having imports cut off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;New&#8221; Versus New<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has been confusion around the terminology used in the FCC Covered List implementation, which refers to the ban on \u201cnew\u201d drones being imported into the United States. Some have suggested that existing models could still be imported to the U.S., as they\u2019re not new models.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Covered List applies to \u201cnew\u201d models, but it means drones that are not already present in the United States. Retailers may sell their inventories until they run out, but no more units are entering the country. DJI\u2019s store is showing all products as out of stock.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/eBkBF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B&amp;H still has many models in stock as of this writing,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/YQDUA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon does as well.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we can still use the drones that are already present in this country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Shop for DJI Products Now &#8211; Once They&#8217;re Gone, They&#8217;re Gone<\/h1>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/DJI\/page\/A2F1C74C-8865-4820-AD23-3C56F28F254C?lp_asin=B0G272V9JD&amp;ref_=ast_bln&amp;store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto\">Visit the Amazon DJI Store<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/bhdji\">Visit the B&amp;H DJI Store page<\/a><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>If DJI is a Risk, Why can we Still Use DJI Products?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Consumer Product Safety Commission is the agency in charge of recalls on products due to defects or hazards to users. If the <\/span>USCPSC finds<a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Recalls\/2026\/KKL-Fabric-9-Drawer-Dressers-Recalled-Due-to-Risk-of-Serious-Injury-or-Death-from-Tip-Over-and-Entrapment-Hazards-Violate-Mandatory-Standard-for-Clothing-Storage-Units-Sold-on-Amazon-by-HK-Brilliant\">\u00a0that a dresser poses a risk of death,<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it requires a recall of the product\u2014every affected unit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in this case, we have governmental agencies claiming that DJI drones pose a clear and immediate threat to infrastructure, privacy, and government operations, but we\u2019re allowed to go ahead and keep using them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a product is dangerous enough to public safety that it can no longer be imported into the country, those units here should be grounded as well. If the units here are allowed to keep flying, it shows that the security concerns aren&#8217;t as dire as reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems our government is protecting us from the outrageous security concerns of operating these drones by allowing them to fly until they wear out, perhaps decades from now. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where Do We Go From Here?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to say what the next steps are. The FCC says it could remove products from the Covered List if the proper governmental agencies perform the legally required security audits. But the President has indicated that he considers the domestic drone market in need of protection and issued an executive order to that effect. I\u2019m not sure how those two things get reconciled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be safe to assume that for the foreseeable future, there will be no new imports of DJI or other foreign drones into the United States, and to plan accordingly. If your business or agency relies on drones, I\u2019d suggest stockpiling replacement units.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire process of adding DJI to the Covered List has unfolded bizarrely, and there\u2019s no telling what will happen next. DJI has said they\u2019ll continue to lobby for a government audit and to be allowed to fly in the United States again, but I wouldn\u2019t hold my breath.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, it seems that when the current inventory of drones dries up, they\u2019re gone for good. While domestic drone manufacturers may be willing to invest in the \u201cconsumer\u201d category of drone, a desire to do something and the plans to do it are completely different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a cautionary tale that at any time, a technology or product we rely on can be made illegal and banned without a public comment, certification process, or alternative solutions.
