A smartphone is a perfect tool for the creator, espcially one working on social media sites like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. They’re always in your pocket, they have amazing image and video quality, and you can post to your accounts right from your phone.

Most phones have some degree of built-in image stabilization, which helps keep your video from looking too shaky, but phones can’t keep up with the motion from even brisk walking, let alone sports or even quickly panning your phone.

The iPhone and many other smartphones have “action” modes, but these require plenty of light, and the frame is cropped to help with the stabilization.

The solution to all of these problems is a gimbal. A quality gimbal eliminates jitters during handheld shooting, enables fancy camera movements like tracking shots and sweeping pans, and can really help improve your smartphone video.

This guide will help you navigate this smartphone gimbal landscape. In it, we break gimbap down into three categories: budget, best, and ultimate. Each of these gimbals works well at stabilizing your phone; the difference is how many features you want in your gimbal.

Our Picks at a Glance

Key Takeaways

Budget gimbals like thecand Zhiyun Smooth Q4 deliver professional three-axis stabilization with impressive battery life and AI tracking at accessible prices. What We Think

A smartphone gimbal that integrates Apple DockKit for system-level tracking support across more than 200 iOS apps, including video calls and live streaming. DockKit is a tool that hardware developers can use to add subject tracking without needing a dedicated app from the gimbal manufacturers. It features Deep Track 4.0 with Active Zoom Tracking, 360° infinite pan rotation, and a built-in selfie stick and built-in tripod in a foldable body weighing around 360g (12.7 oz)with a 300g (10.6 oz) maximum weight. • The Apple DockKit integration provides native tracking support in over 200 iOS apps, including video calls and live streaming platforms.
  • The Deep Track 4.0 with Active Zoom Tracking maintains subject focus even at 15x zoom during fast movement.
  • The built-in tripod, selfie stick, and 10-hour battery create make a nice all-in-one creator tool.
Reasons to Avoid

  • The 300-gram payload capacity restricts use with larger phones in protective cases.

  • The compact size sacrifices some stability compared to full-size gimbals when fully extended.

This is one of the most popular gimbals on the market, and it’s a big improvement over their original Flow model. Insta360’s special sauce is its tracking. Each version of their software and gimbals gets better tracking. This model supports Apple’s new “DockKit,” which allows other apps besides Insta360’s to use the gimbal with full tracking. The result is a gimbal that not only follows your fast-moving subjects outdoors, but can be used to track you on Zoom or streaming tools.

No other gimbal currently has DockKit support, which is why this is always my first recommendation for people shopping for a gimbal.

Zhiyun makes a great range of gimbals, though they tend to feel more like imitations of other products on the market at a lower price. It’s one of the companies you find on Amazon for any gimbal search, but I recommend them to people because they’re solidly built. The software isn’t as good as InstaFlow 360’s Flow, which this is similar to. But if you’re looking for a budget option, this is a good choice.

Budget-conscious creators who want professional stabilization without premium pricing.

Hohem is not a household name, but for those of us who use gimbals with our full camera systems, it’s a familiar name. Hohem makes solid gear, and doesn’t charge a fortune for it. I often recommend this gimbal to anyone looking for a full-featured solution to make their smartphone footage look as good as their camera footage.

This is the more affordable version of Hohem’s phone M-Series. The M7 can be found below.

A smartphone gimbal with DJI’s “ActiveTrack 7.0” subject tracking, inherited from it’s high-end drones. DJI is known for its drones, but I’m a bigger fan of its phone and camera gimbals. DJI’s hardware is always top-end, and their software is excellent, and comes from their drone app, so it’s a very mature and full-featured solution.

Stock image of the hohem iSteady M7
What We Think

A gimbal with a detachable 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen remote that supports wireless control, real-time preview, and tracking selection at distances up to 10 meters. It supports setups as heavy as 500g (1.1 lbs) with thanks to a unique Hohem motor design.

The iSteady M7 includes a built-in 193mm extension rod, and integrates RGB/CCT fill lighting with remote-adjustable brightness and color temperature. The M7 offers approximately 12 hours of operation on a single charge (less with AI tracking active) and is compatible with most modern smartphones via an adjustable clamp spanning roughly 2.28–3.54 inches.

It includes a magnetic “AI Tracker” which can be attached to a subject so that it can track your subject perfectly.

  • The larger size and weight make this less portable than compact foldable gimbals.
  • The premium pricing might make this too expeasive for many smartphone-only shooters.

  • Folded Size: 13.22*2.24*6.26 inch
  • Runtime: ~12 hours
  • Gimbal Axes / Rotation Range: 3-axis

I’ve got this gimbal on my desk, having just put it through its paces. The detacable touchscreen can be used as a remote, an ingenious solution to triggering selfie footage, or for when you put the gimbal on its included tripod feet and the gimbal is too low to access the screen.

This gimbal can hold up to 500g, which is just over a pound, so you can load up your phone with microphones and lights.

It’s the only gimbal in this lineup with a separate “AI” tracker that can be attached to the top of the gimbal and does a better job at subject recognition and tracking than the smartphone’s built in camera could provide.

Bonus: The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is one of the best Vlogging Cameras out there and is a very popular tool for creators and those making content requiring a gimbal. It has a built-in camera so you don’t have to give up using your smartphone while making content. It’s one of the tools I suggest to any content creator looking for a good, portable solution.
