Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM Lens Review: Lab results from our 2018 Best Wide-Angle Prime
While we published a field test of Sony’s new FE 24mm f/1.4 GM lens back in September of 2018, right after its announcement, we’ve finally been able to get a review unit into HQ and put it through our standard lab testing. Winner of our 2018 Lens of the Year award for Best Wide-Angle Prime, the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM is a fantastic, high-quality optic for Sony photographers that’s also very competitively priced compared to similar offerings from Nikon and Canon. The lens is supremely sharp, even at f/1.4, and wonderfully designed to combat chromatic aberration as well as distortion, despite the wide-angle design. Vignetting, however, is a bit strong on a full-frame camera at wider apertures, but it’s fairly easy to correct for this if needed with software.

The physical qualities of the lens are also top-notch. Being a G Master-series lens, the build quality is excellent, with a rugged, weather-resistant construction that includes a gasket around the mount. However, Sony’s managed to keep the size and weight down, and this 24mm f/1.4 is surprisingly compact and light despite the full-frame format and bright aperture. Although certainly more of a photo-centric lens, the 24 f/1.4 features a manual aperture ring that can also be “de-clicked” for smooth and silent aperture adjustments, which is a handy feature for videographers.
