Meike AF Air 56mm f/1.7 Targets Budget Portrait Shooters at $169
Table of Contents
Meike has officially announced the AF Air 56mm f/1.7, a compact autofocus prime designed for APS-C cameras. The release comes shortly after similar “Air” lenses from TTArtisan, suggesting a growing focus on lightweight, affordable optics.
The lens was previously shown at CP+ 2026 alongside other Air series primes, and is now available for Sony E mount.
A Budget-Friendly Portrait Option
The 56mm focal length translates to roughly 84mm equivalent on APS-C, placing it squarely in classic portrait territory. Combined with its f/1.7 aperture, the lens is aimed at photographers looking for strong subject separation and a shallow depth of field.
That combination should make it well-suited for portraits, while also working for general telephoto use and casual video.
The lens uses an 11-element, 7-group optical design, which Meike says is optimized for sharpness and reduced aberrations. The company also claims improved control over flare and consistent color reproduction.
While real-world performance remains to be seen, the specs suggest a focus on balanced image quality across the frame at an entry-level price point.
Autofocus and Video Use
Autofocus is powered by an STM stepping motor, which is designed to deliver smooth and quiet operation—particularly useful for video.
Meike says the lens exhibits minimal focus breathing, and it supports subject detection and tracking when paired with compatible cameras. The minimum focusing distance is 0.55 meters, which is typical for a lens in this range.
Lightweight “Air” Design
As part of the Air series, the 56mm f/1.7 is built to be compact and easy to carry. It weighs just 190 grams and measures 66.5mm in length, making it a natural fit for smaller mirrorless bodies.
The lens uses 52mm filters and is available in both black and white finishes.
Pricing and Availability
The Meike AF Air 56mm f/1.7 is priced at $169 and is now available in black through Meike’s online store and major retailers. The white version is expected to be available starting April 20.
A Nikon Z mount version is also planned, though no release timeline has been announced.
