Sony Adds 4K120p to ZV-E10 II and Rolls Out Feature-Packed A1 Firmware 4.00
Table of Contents
Sony has dropped a major firmware update for the ZV-E10 II, and the headline feature is a big one: the compact vlogging camera can now shoot 4K120p. For creators who love slow motion, this means up to 5x slower footage and a lot more creative headroom than before.
While it’s the only addition in this update, it’s still a significant leap. The original ZV-E10 topped out at 4K30p, and even the ZV-E10 II only offered 4K60p at launch. The jump to 120p brings the camera closer to Sony’s higher-end hybrid models, though with a few caveats.
Enabling 4K120p introduces about a 38% crop. It’s not extreme, but it definitely affects framing on the wider end. Several functions also become unavailable in this mode, including proxy recording, Smart Zoom, Clear Image Zoom, and Digital Zoom. Active SteadyShot is disabled as well, though you can switch to Standard stabilization — just note that doing so results in a 1.6x crop.
The update also expands slow-motion flexibility in Full HD, with the XAVC S format now supporting up to 240 fps (recorded at 24p). In practice, this gives you up to 10x slow motion in 1080p, which is especially useful for sports, movement-heavy scenes, and creative motion shots that benefit from dramatic playback.
Sony A1 Firmware Update 4.00
Sony also released firmware version 4.00 for its flagship A1, bringing a long list of upgrades introduced with the A7R V over to the company’s top-tier mirrorless body.
The Focus Area menu gets a substantial overhaul. Spot focusing now offers XL and XS sizes for finer control, while three new Custom slots let photographers define their own focus zones and recall them instantly. Tracking AF gains the same additions, with Tracking: Spot XL, Tracking: Spot XS, and three new Tracking: Custom presets. Together, these changes give A1 shooters six customizable tracking zones — a meaningful upgrade for wildlife, sports, and event photographers who need rapid focusing adjustments.
Firmware 4.00 adds support for Sony’s Write Digital Signature function for video, embedding cryptographic signatures into footage to confirm it hasn’t been altered. It’s part of Sony’s broader Camera Authenticity Solution and requires a paid license, with availability timing still unclear for non-media customers. It’s a direct response to growing authenticity concerns in news and documentary spaces.
The update also brings a long list of workflow improvements, including the ability to delete or rate images across both card slots at once, display folder and file names during playback, cancel scheduled FTP transfers, and integrate additional Transfer & Tagging features. The Monitor & Control app gains support for focus map display and an IRIS operation bar as well. Some of these features depend on app or regional availability.
Several functions are being deprecated, including IPsec and older WPA/WEP Wi-Fi security protocols, with Sony pushing users toward WPA2 and WPA3. The update also resolves a handful of issues, including a delay in resuming continuous shooting and occasional problems with the multi-selector on the vertical grip. Overall stability has been improved.

Pricing and Availability
The ZV-E10 II firmware update is available for free through Sony’s Creators’ Cloud website. Users will need to download and install a free license key, and rollout timing varies by region.
Firmware 4.00 for the Sony A1 is also available as a free update on the Sony Support site. However, it’s worth approaching the installation with some caution. A similar firmware update for the A7 IV was briefly pulled after owners reported stability problems, including a reboot loop triggered when closing the rear screen. As of now, there are no reported issues with the A1 update, but keeping an eye on community feedback before updating is still a smart move.
