Thypoch has officially released the Eureka 28mm f/2.8, a compact pancake lens that was first introduced late last year. After several months of waiting, the lens is now available for Leica M-mount users.

The Eureka series leans heavily into vintage design, and this 28mm continues that approach with styling inspired by the Dallmeyer Anastigmat 35mm f/3.5, originally used in the Ilford Advocate.

A Classic Focal Length in a Compact Form

The 28mm focal length is a long-time favorite for street, travel, and documentary photography. It offers a wider field of view than 35mm or 50mm, making it easier to capture context and environment in a scene.

Paired with an f/2.8 aperture, the lens should also be usable in lower light conditions while still keeping the overall size compact.

The lens uses a 7-element, 4-group optical design that includes one aspherical element and three high-refractive elements. Thypoch says this setup is designed to balance modern sharpness with a more classic rendering style.

A multi-coated front element helps control flare and contrast, while the overall design aims to echo the character of older rangefinder lenses.

Manual Focus With Traditional Controls

As expected for a Leica M-mount lens, the Eureka 28mm is manual focus only. It focuses down to 0.4 meters and includes a focus lever to make quick adjustments easier.

The lens also features an 8-blade aperture, which can produce defined starburst effects when shooting bright point light sources.

Build and Finish Options

The Thypoch Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH is available in two finishes: Matte Black and Pearl White.

The lens is available in two finishes: Matte Black and Pearl White. The black version uses a lacquer-style coating that will gradually wear over time, revealing the brass underneath for a patina effect.

The Pearl White version offers a softer, more modern look with a subtle sheen under light. Both versions use a mix of brass and aluminum alloy for durability.

One of the main draws of the Eureka 28mm is its size. The lens measures just 21.9mm in length and weighs 133 grams, making it an easy match for compact rangefinder setups.

It also uses a small 27mm filter thread, keeping the overall footprint minimal.

Pricing and Availability

The Thypoch Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH is now available for pre-order at $459 through major retailers. In addition to the Leica M version, a Fujifilm X-mount variant is also available.

With its compact build and vintage-inspired rendering, the Eureka 28mm looks aimed at photographers who want a classic shooting experience in a modern, lightweight package.
