After much anticipation, Sony has revealed its newest hybrid mirrorless camera, the Sony A7 V. The camera is now open for pre-order, with the body expected to ship this month and a full kit arriving in February 2026.

“The Alpha 7 V resets expectations on what an all-around Full-frame camera can achieve,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “By evolving autofocus intelligence, color science, and system responsiveness, we’re enriching our expanding lineup with a powerful new option that provides creators with an advanced tool capable of keeping up with their creativity and bringing them one step closer to achieving their dreams.”

UPDATE: Read About The Fake Outrage Over the Sony a7 V

Powerful New Sensor and  Processing Engine

The A7 V retains a 33-megapixel resolution akin to its predecessor, but upgrades to a partially stacked full-frame sensor — a move that allows the camera to leverage a blackout-free 30 fps burst mode with the electronic shutter. Sony claims the new sensor delivers up to 16 stops of dynamic range, and its design enables photographers to shoot silently at high frame rates with minimal compromise.

Complementing the sensor is the upgraded Bionz XR2 image processor, now equipped with a dedicated AI processing unit for improved autofocus performance and subject tracking. The new processor aims to deliver better color accuracy and more consistent auto white balance, borrowing technology found in Sony’s higher-tier models.

Autofocus has received a significant upgrade with the A7 V supports 759 phase-detect AF points, covering approximately 94% of the sensor area, with sensitivity down to –4 EV. According to Sony, eye- and subject-detection speed — including for animals and birds — is 30–50% faster compared to the A7 IV.

The camera also introduces a Pre-Capture mode that begins buffering a second of footage when the shutter button is half-pressed. Once pressed fully, pre-captured frames are saved. Additionally, a “Speed Boost” option lets users switch continuous shooting rates up to 30 fps.

Video Performance and Thermal Stability

The A7 V continues to target serious video shooters with 4K60p 10-bit recording from the full sensor width and 4K120p with a Super 35 crop for higher-frame-rate capture. The updated heat management system uses a Sigma-shaped graphite heat sink integrated into the stabilization unit to maintain recording reliability over extended takes.

Sony has also added Dynamic Active Mode stabilization, which delivers smoother and steadier handheld footage — ideal for vlogging, run-and-gun production, or simply capturing everyday family moments without a gimbal.

Another creator-focused upgrade is Auto Framing, an AI-powered feature that automatically adjusts composition to maintain the subject in an optimal position within the frame. This helps ensure stable and professionally composed video even when the camera remains static on a tripod.

The camera supports Breathing Compensation, S-Log3 for broader grading flexibility, S-Cinetone for cinematic color science, and LUT importing through Sony Creators’ Cloud for accurate monitoring.

Updated Body, Ergonomics, and Connectivity

The A7 V sports a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor that combines tilting and flip capabilities with a high-resolution Quad VGA OLED EVF offering 3.68 million dots, 0.78× magnification, and 120 fps refresh rate. Dual memory card slots — one CFexpress Type A/SD UHS-II slot and one SD UHS-II slot — offer flexible storage management.

Built around a robust magnesium alloy chassis, the camera features improved mount rigidity, a refined grip, and extensive weather sealing to protect against dust and moisture. It accepts the high-capacity NP-FZ100 lithium-ion battery, now rated for approximately 630 EVF shots or 750 LCD shots per charge — about 23% better than the previous generation.

On the connectivity front, the A7 V includes a full-sized HDMI A output, dual USB-C ports (one for charging, one for data), 3.5 mm microphone and headphone jacks, and a Multi Interface Shoe for accessories like the ECM-B1M shotgun mic or XLR-K3M adapter kit — enabling high-quality, digital audio capture.

A New All-Around Lens

Alongside the new camera, Sony has introduced the FE 28–70mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS II as the latest lightweight kit zoom built for everyday shooting. Designed to pair seamlessly with the A7 V’s upgraded performance, this lens supports up to 120 fps AF/AE tracking, continuous shooting responsiveness, and coordinated optical + in-body stabilization for steadier handheld imagery.

Autofocus remains active even while zooming, and the lens includes built-in focus breathing compensation support, making it more suitable for filmmaking than its predecessor. With its compact footprint and broad focal range, it aims to be a versatile option for everything from fast-paced action and events to casual family videos and travel photography.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony A7 V is now open for pre-order from major retailers, including B&H and Adorama, priced at $2,898 for the body-only configuration. It is slated to begin shipping in late December 2025. A kit version paired with the new FE 28–70mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS II lens is scheduled to arrive in February 2026.

The FE 28–70mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS II will also be sold separately for approximately $499 when it launches in February.
